A local World War Two veteran has celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends at Croft Meadow care home.
Donald Perrens, DSO, OBE, marked his milestone at the care home in Steyning. He was joined by staff and loved ones – including his wife of 35 years, Marian – and had a surprise visit from active personnel from RAF Swanwick.
The veteran, who was born in Willinghall, Staffordshire, served in the Army and the Royal Air Force from 1939 to 1946, where he was promoted to Squadron Leader and received a Distinguished Flying Cross. He later moved to Eastbourne and taught at the local college for 35 years, where he was the head of science, acting headmaster and was also responsible for setting up a local branch of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF).
The Eastbourne College Combined Cadet Force is still going strong today. With more than 300 cadets, it is one of the largest contingents in the South East. Donald was honoured with an OBE for his services to the Cadet Corps. He was also responsible for setting up the Sussex Fighter Control Unit.
Sharalee Thrumble, manager at Croft Meadow, commented: “It’s wonderful to be able to mark these milestones and give Donald and his family the chance to celebrate together. Everyone loves to hear about his past.”
Croft Meadow provides care for up to 60 older people, including those with a dementia, and will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year.
