Residents at Elizabeth House dinner together (fish & Chips lunch) for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, listening to old time songs.
One of our Resident Ernest who celebrated his 100th Birthday yesterday said ' the day before DDay he saw 100s and 100s of tents and soldiers on Southsea Common preparing to go out to Dunkirk, the next day they were all gone!'
Sadly, a short while afterwards Ernest witnessed the return of the fallen comrads from the beaches and refers to them as the 'Souls' returning home.
Ernest was stationed at Portsdown Hill, Portsmouth and was a despatch rider along the south coast for the commander in Chief. Ernest was 17 when he joined the navy.
