Two great fun activities which residents enjoyed this week . 

Making bird feeders with empty loo rolls and smothering in peanut butter and placing them outside on our bird feeding stations, the birds love them! 

Decorating biscuits with an assortment of goodies. Residents will enjoy eating these for afternoon tea.

Residents had great fun making this Guy Fawkes at Cartref. 

A very informative talk was given on the subject and the reason why we celebrate with bonfires and fireworks.

Residents from Cartref recently went out for coffee and cake and donated £50 to this wonderful charity. It was lovely to meet up with other members of our local community and we even won a raffle prize!

Residents also enjoyed a lovely session with Fran and Sarah bringing in some of natures treasures and little objects to touch and hold. 

Tai Chi which are very gentle movements while focusing on breathing helped everyone to feel very relaxed.

Roma & Paul celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a beautiful buffet, cake and montage of their wedding day photos made by the team at Cartref.

They have both been living with us at Cartref for a couple of years. They received a special congratulations card from King Charles and Queen Camilla and many other cards from staff, family and friends.

Their daughter made a fruit cake which was beautifully decorated by Linda, one of our cooks. The theme for a 65th Wedding Anniversary is sapphire so blue was the theme of the day. Linda prepared a delicious lunch time buffet which all residents enjoyed and staff decorated the home and arranged the tables to replicate a wedding setting. 

All in all a wonderful celebration which was a total surprise for the happy couple.

Well done Team Cartref for going the extra mile to make this day so special for Roma and Paul!

We held our own Mini Olympic Games over the past couple of weeks. Residents participated in a variety of competitions including Quoits, Beer Pong, Balloon Volleyball, Hook A Duck and Bean Bag Throwing. 

Points were awarded for each competition and Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were given to the overall winners at our award ceremony while the National Anthem was sang. 

Everyone who participated received a Winner’s medal. We even enjoyed Olympic themed cup!

This morning a couple of our ladies enjoyed a coffee morning at our local RBL community hub. It was lovely for them to catch up with friends and members of our local community for a chat. They were both delighted to win a prize on the tombola.

Meanwhile David was busy shelling Broad Beans sat in the garden enjoying the sunshine.

Residents from Cartref enjoyed a couple of trips out lately one to a local lunch club and the other to a Vintage Afternoon Tea. 

We were also lucky enough to have a local female jockey, Katie Powell, visit to give us a talk on her experience in the racing world.

We held a Eurovision Pre Party at Cartref. Celebrating some of the United Kingdom’s Entries and also celebrating 50 years of ABBA .

A lovely morning at Cartref talking about Mayday traditions. A mop handle, some coloured ribbons and a bit of an imagination and we had our own Maypole.
This provided lots of fun and laughter!

Celebrating Saint Georges Day with a special afternoon tea! We were out and about for lunch in the local community and enjoyed some art therapy at HayDay Creative Cafe. The activities don't stop as we had a visit from our local nursery children this morning!

Residents enjoyed making Easter Bonnets, an indoor Easter egg hunt with Little Stars Nursery and Easter Bingo with Year 6 Hay Primary School Children. Happy Easter!

Here are some of our activities that took part this week at Cartref. 

Mother’s Day, Hook a duck with the children from Little Stars Nursery and an afternoon of horse racing watching live from Cheltenham. Great fun was had by all!

Yesterday, two of our lovely residents went out to Talgarth Lunch Club where they mingled with lots of people in the local community and enjoyed a delicious two course meal . 

Today some of our residents played a game of scrabble and we had a great discussion on houses and how times have changed since they were young with indoor toilets, running water and electricity all available now!

We had a busy week at Cartref! Some of the activties we took part in are - Jigsaw puzzles, cookery, and hand massages. 

We also enjoyed an outing to a creative cafe where we enjoyed Mary Poppins themed workshop, kite making, singing and a delicious lunch.

To celebrate St David's Day we had a concert, a quiz on Wales, roast lamb lunch, visits from both of our local Pre Nursery and Primary School, and a few Iriish Jigs thrown in as well. 

This morning at Cartref, residents made bird feeders using the inside of toilet rolls which they then covered in peanut butter and then rolled them in bird seed and suet. String was then used to hang them up from our bird feeding stations and bird tables. Residents are looking forward to seeing which birds they can spot feeding on them!

Residents celebrated Valentine’s Day at Cartref with a delicious roast turkey lunch with all the trimmings, followed by individual cheesecakes topped with strawberry’s and chocolate, and to finish off we indulged in heart shaped chocolates.

At supper time, red velvet cupcakes were enjoyed with a glass of sparkling pink fizz. Thank you to our talented cook Linda who cooked up this amazing special Valentine’s Day Meal.

Sylvia had made heart shaped Valentine shortbread biscuits which residents enjoyed with their morning coffee.

Holly entertained us with her beautiful vocal melodies of love songs in the afternoon.

All in all, a wonderful day when “love was in the air".

Great fun was had this afternoon when we held a 'Toss The Pancake' competition!

The crunch rugby 6 Nations match between England and Wales. Supper served while residents watched, some supporting England and others Wales. It was a great atmosphere!

Cartref residents busy this morning in an arts and craft session making paper roses.

We have started to decorate Cartref today ready for next weeks Valentines Day.

Our local pastor came in this afternoon and residents joined in with the singing of hymns, it was lovely and uplifting!

We are looking forward to the Six Nations Rugby this weekend at Cartref.

This afternoon we joined members of our local community for a lovely lunch of delicious homemade soup, cakes and plenty of tea and coffee! 

This was followed by a talk and slide show on Scotland, some art work and a sing a long to finish off with. We received a lovely warm welcome and had a fabulous time.

We held a fantastic afternoon event here in Cartref, raising money for MacMillan. The residents were very involved both with making some of the cakes, helping with the raffle and counting the money raised and putting the money into bags to bank. They were delighted when MacMillan sent us a poster stating how much money they had raised. £301, well done and thank you to all who heled.

This afternoon we held our Sparkle and Sequin Party at Cartref. Residents, staff, family and friends all joined in with dressing up in style. A delicious buffet was served and a Christmas themed quiz was held. This was followed by live entertainment from Holly where everyone joined in with the singing and dancing. A fabulous fun filled afternoon!

We have had great fun recently with lots of entertainment and prizes to be won! A lovely afternoon bridging the generation gap.

We have also enjoyed an outing to our local Garden Centre, the residents enjoyed having a cup of coffee and a mince pie then looking at all of the lovely Christmas decorations. Some family members joined us and also some staff members gave up their time voluntarily. 

We have been getting into the Christmas spirit at Cartref.

Residents have enjoyed our makeshift advent calendar with little treats inside and also a local community Christmas lunch where residents went out to enjoy a full 2 course Christmas Turkey Lunch with all the trimmings. We enjoyed entertainment by a Male Voice Choir, had a couple of games of bingo and a raffle. We love being part of the local community and meeting lots of new people was fantastic. 

We call this our 'Fun Friday' sessions. The local school children from our local Hay - On - Wye Primary school come in and visit us during the afternoon and this weeks activity was making paper chains for Christmas. It was the longest paper chain I have ever seen! Great fun and great interaction and conversation between the older and younger generations.

We celebrated in style with staff long service and some Service Champions. 

We also enjoyed a tasty buffet and delicious cakes!

It was such a lovely day surrounded by family and friends.

Cartref are holding a Macmillan Afternoon Tea next month.
Everyone welcome to come along for a cake and a coffee. 
 

We had a photo taken today with members of the Hay on Wye Lions club who kindly donated a bird bath for our residents rose garden.

Congratulations to Valerie Williams at Cartref, celebrating 25 years of service today. Thank you Val from all the team and residents for all you do.

George, a bank catering assistant at Cartref and also the local town crier, popped in today to sing a few songs for St David's Day.

Bonfire night at Cartref in Powys 

Liz Thomas, who works at Cartref care home, has been presented with the ‘Inspirational Individual Award’ - sponsored by Nexon - at Shaw healthcare’s annual Shaw Star Awards.

Cartref has received a pleasant surprise as they have been awarded a certificate for their 'best dressed window' competition for their innovative floral design which incorporated bird feeders within the display.
